My understanding
trip
7 a : to actuate a mechanism b : to become operative
or
b (1) : a device for tripping a mechanism (as a catch or detent)
Usually these are safety circuits that will trip, say, when a threshold speed is exceeded. Usually electrical, in series with the power switch.
Notabschaltung can be used, but to me it has the connotation of a manual action while 'trip' is usually without manual intervention.
You are in the right ballpark with ...abschaltung.
Good luck.
