Thank you, Rina! I think it's a proper word in the circumstances - he didn't give his leader away just for the heck of it - he had been "worked over", i.e. beaten into this betrayal. He couldn't stand it any longer and surrendered Shipulin.

: мне нравится turn smbd in; но смущает одно: все эти выражения имеют смысл "выдать человека, который действительно в чем-то замешан" (преступника, активиста). Здесь же дело было шито, насколько я понимаю контекст, так что это не совсем тот оттенок
