спасибо :)
neutral Alexander Demyanov : стучать и сдавать - не совсем одно и тоже Betray, но не в смысле "сдать".++Да, но rat - это скорее доносить. А описываемое в оригинале мне кажется более похожим на Маккартизм, когда людей заставляли называть имена "замешанных" друзей.

да, это не совсем одно и то же. Тем не менее rat on smbd также имеет значение to betray / http://www.peevish.co.uk/slang/r.htm *rat on* Verb. To inform on, betray

Surrender

Surrender implies a giving up after a struggle.

So Pilate decided to grant their demand.
He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

agree Oleksandr Artyukov : ...Milosevic is on trial, because Yugoslavia surrended him to the Tribunal.

Thank you, Oleksandr! Great example :-)
agree Montefiore : this might work, if the context contains what we think as "under duress"

Thank you, Rina! I think it's a proper word in the circumstances - he didn't give his leader away just for the heck of it - he had been "worked over", i.e. beaten into this betrayal. He couldn't stand it any longer and surrendered Shipulin.

Близкий синоним для \"сдать\" - \"выдать\". Все эти варианты означают именно это - сдать/выдать кого-то кому-то.

В конкретном случае, так как он был обработан (т.е. под давлением из него выбили/вытянули информацию), то лучше всего \"he gave up Boris Shipulin as ...\".

Rumor has it that ***he gave up his friend and co-activist Robeson to the inquisition***. But there is no public record that Lee denounced Robeson or was otherwise disloyal to him.

Причем тут Маккартизм... То, о чем здесь говорится, происходило раньше и имело масштабы страны, масштабы миллионов людей, наконец вошло в менталитет народа. Давайте не будем сравнивать несравнимые вещи.

agree Vladimir Chumak : больше всего подходит "turn smb in"
21 mins
Спасибо! может быть.
neutral Elena Ivaniushina : мне нравится turn smbd in; но смущает одно: все эти выражения имеют смысл "выдать человека, который действительно в чем-то замешан" (преступника, активиста). Здесь же дело было шито, насколько я понимаю контекст, так что это не совсем тот оттенок
24 mins
Возможно, Вы правы, хотя я не убежден. ADDED: кстати, to turn smb in - необязательно сдача именно виноватого человека
neutral Alexander Demyanov : 1. Despite the references, "give up" is not the right idiom for the meaning. 2. You hand over smb in your custody.

sold him out

Still a very common expression. Today is often used as a joke - I can ask a friend or a colleage - OK, don't sell me out - не выдавай, не закладывай.
