Administer an enema (to empty the lower bowel)
I think this is what is meant as it is what a nurse would do. An emema ist ein Einlauf. Of course it would have been more helpful if there had been more context from the beginning.
Example sentence:
The nurse had to administer an enema in order to clear the lower bowel for the procedure.

: or "You need to induce a bowel movement" I don't think "please" is necessary.

I agree :) "You need to have a bowl movement" is definitely better.

Please take laxatives!

The day before the colonoscopy, the patient is either given a laxative preparation (such as bisacodyl, phospho soda, sodium picosulfate, or sodium phosphate and/or magnesium citrate) and large quantities of fluid, or whole bowel irrigation is performed using a solution of polyethylene glycol and electrolytes. Discussion
Nur bei Delegation dieser Aufgabe wäre z.B. so umzuformulieren: "Please inform the patient about taking the laxative".
sdvplatt: Nursing report. … Another segment in same document "Pat. abgeführt und zur Endoskopie und Koloskopie geschickt".
Fazit: Die Schwester berichtet über ihre Tätigkeit.

Since the patient, I hope, has no "laxative effect," we're back to what I posted below.
In Klinikum Weiden's "Therapie des Hauses: Interne Leitlinien, urologische Behandlungspfade," they'll give you two options for "Abführen":
Either something like Klysma or Laxans or an "Einlauf." An Einlauf has little to do with taking laxatives. If the first suggestion given isn't an option, there's always "clear bowels":
"A successful colonoscopy requires 100% clear bowels. Any type of stool in your colon can get in the way of your gastroenterologist’s ability to see the surface of your large intestine."
https://thegeriatricdietitian.com/colonoscopy-diet-prep/
"Days before the colonoscopy, your doctor will give you a set of instructions to achieve clean and clear bowels for the procedure."
https://www.findatopdoc.com/Healthy-Living/The-Right-Age-to-...
Best fit:
"You have to prep for a virtual colonoscopy the same way you do for a traditional colonoscopy to make sure your bowels are clear."
https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diagnostics/4949-colon...
1. (= wegführen) to lead or take away; Gefangenen to take away
2. (= abgeben) Betrag to pay (an +acc to)
intransitive verb
1. das würde vom Thema abführen that would take us off the subject
2. (= den Darm anregen) to have a laxative effect
https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/german-engli...
Note: 'have a laxative effect' is not the topic of the question as it does not refer to colonoscopy. 'Take a laxative' or 'administer a laxative' is stronger and required for colonoscopy.
https://www.einbecker-morgenpost.de/einbeck/nachricht/darmkr...
I mean--sorry for the image--but you honestly want to tell those doing the endoscopy that the patient's been given medicine but hasn't "emptied" themselves out yet? See them running for the exits then.
We have a few doctors on this forum. Am curious what they have to say.
Best
Bitte Abführen. > Please administer a laxative.
is what I am tending towards
https://www.netdoktor.de/diagnostik/darmspiegelung/vorbereit...
It may sound weird (even to Germans), but yes this is about:
"den Stuhlgang fördern
Beispiele:
vor der Operation muss der Patient abführen
(stark) abführende Mittel, Arzneien"
https://www.dwds.de/wb/abführen
In these cases, however, it's important to go by meaning. As the "Gastroenterology and Hepatology: A Clinical Handbook" by N. J. Talley, I. Segal, and Martin D. Weltman says: "Ensure the patient has an empty stomach."
(see GoogleBooks)
Another segment in same document
Again, please do not misquote or distort my contributions to the discussion.
Darmblähungen sollen abgeführt werden ...(winds) drawn off.
A doctor advises a constipated patient to open his/her bowels. The doctor might provide some tips how to best achieve this.
or:
A doctor instructs a nurse to help a patient to open his/her bowels.
However, more context would be needed to confirm this.
