But it really hit me one day how inconsistent the gap theory is. It is logically inconsistent. [...]. The gap theory actually ***explains away the very thing it is supposed to be accommodating***. What do I mean by that? Well, [...] the gap theorist says, “I’ll accept the millions of years developed by those who claim the layers of fossils were laid down slowly over long ages, and place all this in a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, and then explain it away with a catastrophe called Lucifer’s flood.” And right there, he has just done away with the reason he wanted millions of years in the first place. If a catastrophe produced the fossils — then the reason for the millions of years in the first place has been destroyed! What an incredible inconsistency.

: Your view of the meaning of ' explain away' is too narrow; it also means ' justify', like here.

I don't believe that 'justify' fits the context as explained by Asker.

Thank you, Adrian.

Below is a reference to the Gap Theory, also accepted as the ruin and reconstruction theory. According to the Biblical reference, the earth was God's initial creation of perfection without sin. The reference explains that a Judgement of God caused a phenomenal catastrophe and chaos, leaving the Earth formless and void. It had been created to perfection, then later to become desolate and uninhabitable for an immeasurable period of time. Some theorists claim that a Gap period lasted for millions of years during which fossils emerged and came to existence. The biblical theory claims that the Judgement was described as a flood which brought the Earth to be submerged in water. A Satanic rebellion is suggested as a cause for a Judgement by which God judged all of the Earth's inhabitants, leaving behind fossil remains only. Those became plants and animals later.
The Gap Theory estimates the time period during which the Earth lay desolate and uninhabitable until its subsequent reconstruction.

There's a space and time continuum which explains "Time is treated as universal with a constant rate of passage which is independent of the state of motion of an observer. This is because the rate at which time passes depends on an object's velocity relative to the observer. The strength of any gravitational field slows the passage of time of an object as seen by an observer outside the field."

Therefore the estimation of a gap period of millions of years is possible. from a scientific perspective, particularly if an observer existed outside of the Earth's atmosphere. Due to a distance in space the measurement of time is greater when further away than it is when it's measured from a distance lying closer to the Earth.
