petite huile verte

French to English Art/Literary Cooking / Culinary
I'm sure I've come across "petite huile" before but not sure how to translate it. I'm assuming "verte" may mean it's flavoured with herbs, but would love to know how others have translated this.

@Anne McDowall @philgoddard Sorry for not having been able to answer earlier. 1) green oil is indeed the same as herb oil, but herb-flavoured oil most often means that the herbs have infused in the oil and been removed; 2) “petite” refers to its quantity; 3) indeed, green oil is highly concentrated in herbs, hence its colour and name.

@philgoddard Thanks for the suggestion. Possibly, but I'm guessing that's a guess! Job submitted now and I've just put 'green oil'. Not great, but better than jumping to wrong conclusions (and better than a lot of restaurant menu translations I've seen!)

I think it's what is simply called 'Green Sauce' in English; sometimes the Spanish term is used also.

Thanks for contributing, Andrew. However, isn't 'green sauce' simply 'sauce verte' in French. I'm not sure I see the connection between 'petite huile verte' and 'green sauce', unless you have other references. Unfortunately, I need to send this job in soon, so unless I get other suggestions, I may just go with 'green sauce', but I'd prefer confirmation.

disagree Elisabeth Gootjes : Salsa verde contains mustard and vinegar (or alike) and is called “sauce verte” in FR-FR. “Green oil” is often used in UK-EN (but is also a brand name for a bicycle maintenance oil), as well as herb oil.

Just a tentative answer, those with more experience will no doubt have a better idea, but I did see it referenced on the site listed below. Admittedly, it's a WordPress site, rather than an official website, but it does use the term huile verte.

I suppose my question would be is if the term's being used as part of a larger recipe, (i.e. it's saying to add just a bit of "huile verte") or some other context.

I hope this helps, or at least gives you more ideas!

Thanks for your contribution Gabriel. The context here is a restaurant menu. I'm still thinking that 'petite' has significance here (i.e. it's not just meaning 'a little'), but I'm out of time so may have to go with a literal translation.

Why not? There are certainly better translations, but it's possible. The denotation and conotation is a fact.
