Portuguese term

nossos aposentos

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Religion religious address
Hi

This appears in a blessing/address made by a bishop at the end of a meeting. The address is tailored to that specific meeting. Does 'nossos aposentos' here have some specific, religious meaning (and is there an equivalent in EN)? Or is it simply a flowery way of saying 'our home'? Country is Mozambique.

"Abençoe a cada um de nós e nos conduza protegidos para os nossos aposentos e para aqueles que estão fora deles."

Many thanks.

Discussion

Lucy Phillips (asker) Apr 21, 2021:
good point Mark! though it was very much a not particularly relevant aside in a much more important factual transcription, so I decided to go for clarity in this case.
Mark Robertson Apr 14, 2021:
Eclesio-pomposo The source text is a good example of "discurso eclesio-pomposo" and any translation should have to reflect that.
Lucy Phillips (asker) Apr 14, 2021:
clarification sorry, just realized there was an important bit of context missing. These people are in a Zoom meeting - although I have no idea if they are working from home, or at their separate offices/premises.

our homes

Based on the sentence you provided, I would say the bishop is talking about each person's home. That's basically a synonym, a bit more formal, that can also refer to chambers, rooms, offices and etc.
Note from asker:
Thanks Kevin - and how do you read the bit about 'para aqueles que estão fora deles'? sorry if that's another question, but the phrasing is unclear to me - those who are not in their homes?
Peer comment(s):

agree Kathleen Goldsmith-Killing : It can also mean "our rooms"

Yeah, but in this case it seems like it's the end of the meeting, so they are heading home :)

Cheers Mark. Yes, that works too!
agree Ana Rita Santiago : maybe our lodgings, if the ones being blessed are staying temporarily somewhere other than their homes.

our premises

"Aposentos" não se refere à casa inteira, mas somente a uma área privativa. Além disso, pode não ser uma casa/residência, visto que o termo se aplica a outros tipos de "aposentos", que podem ser profissionais também.

Please note if these people are going to a hotel after the meeting, they are not going home. I insist "aposentos" does not necessarily refer to home, otherwise the author woud have used "para casa" or "para seus lares" or something like that. In Portuguese, it's not common at all to use "aposentos" to refere to one's home.

our hearths and heartlands

e para aqueles que estão fora deles... and for those who may be away from them cf. Scots: outwith the confines of such.

Hearth is used symbolically to mean a home entry 2 OED plus in many SlavonIc languages.

Hearth and home is a term of art but wouldn't fit office premises too well.
Example sentence:

But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.

our living quarters

I believe "quarters" this gives the idea of aposentos, as it could be one bedroom or a whole house.

it could also be just "quarters" as used in the military, similar to "quartel".
