Hello everyone,

A few years ago, I worked with a young company named Soul Carrier that produced unique handbags for women. At the time, Soul Carrier was using a video to tell their story, and while it was a well-produced piece, it committed a classic storytelling mistake: it wasn’t really a story.

I worked with Soul Carrier to rework the video—to tell the story of a young woman who lost her parents and, for a time, her way. It’s a powerful founder story that touches on loss, finding your path, and ***redemption***. It’s moving, raw, and authentic. And, of course, it’s a story.

This is the video in question:

I have to admit I'm not sure what "redemption" means in the text.

Thank you.

Mikhail Korolev (asker) Feb 26, 2021:
Thank you very much again, Yvonne.
Yvonne Gallagher Feb 26, 2021:
Yes, some video transcription. Hope it helps

At beginning "I suppose my story STARTS like anyone else's..."

0.48 "...what I wasn't expecting was how hard the aftermath would be; everyone was wondering what I would become in light of this tragedy.
There was a lot of pressure, SCRUTINY, a lot of noise.
I'll never forget the last words my mother said to me. She was sitting in the passenger seat of the car and seconds before the accident happened she turned around and she said to me "Where do you want to go? The next moment was chaos. She never even got to finish that sentence..."
Mikhail Korolev (asker) Feb 26, 2021:
Yvonne, thank you for your help and support, really appreciate it.

As for the words I can't make out in the video:

At the very beginning: "I suppose my story ... like anyone else’s." I suspect it should be "starts", but what I hear is something like "strites."

at 00.55: there is a lot of pressure... a lot of noise.
Yvonne Gallagher Feb 26, 2021:
@ Mikhail no need for apologies. No confusion. You never said you were working from a tapescript so I took it that "the video in question" referred to the old video that was to be reworked and that the text you gave was a synopsis of the "founder story" to be told properly.
So I didn't bother watching it before posting an answer as the meaning of "redemption" was already clear to me in the text (and BTW I believe it to need a stronger verb than "healing" as I've indicated). I've watched the video now but learnt nothing new to dissuade me from my understanding of the word as used. If you don't understand some words in the video just give an indication of the time slot.
Mikhail Korolev (asker) Feb 25, 2021:
Maurizio, very sorry for not making myself clear enough and for the confusion.

The text I posted is from the book Stories That Stick by Kindra Hall and it is she who wrote "redemption."
Wordrow (X) Feb 25, 2021:
Jumping ahead of Mikhail's response: I listened to the video a few times, and no, "redemption" is not mentioned.
BdiL Feb 25, 2021:
Sorry Mikhail, I watched the video and expected to hear "redemption". No way. I'm either deaf or "dumb". So my question is: is it you who wrote redemption...but then you don't really know what it means? And, to the esteemed colleagues who so promptly helped: you too did listen to the video and did not hear "redemption" used?
Am I simply an idiot? Just saying. Thanks. Maurizio

hard to use just 1 word for redemption as it implies so many things. It can also mean salvation in some circumstances.

redeeming yourself, saving yourself from further errors or harm

However, here it has the meaning of starting afresh, coming back to herself having lost her way for a while, with a strong sense of rejuvenation and renewal. Yes, "redemption" really does have all those meanings!

"a young woman who lost [...] her way. a story that touches on loss, finding your path, ..."

so she is back on track now, and has found her path to start over feeling rejuvenated

redemption

Redemption is essentially making up for things that you’ve done wrong - I guess here where it says she ‘lost her way’ means she got involved in some things that were bad, hurt people and that she regretted, maybe drugs or crime, but in the end came through, got her life back on track and did some good things that made up for the bad. Hope that helps.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Heather. Well, there are some words in the video I can't make out, but I don't think she mentions that she was involved in doing something bad.

neutral AllegroTrans : Asker's text doesn't suggest doing wrong, hurting people, drugs or crime, she just lost her parents

healing

Redemption has a strong connotation of being rescued by God, an entity, a process. The latter is what you focus on here, but the term is so theological (so is “manifestation”, ref. video). Restoration would mean being brought back to an original state, but you want something visionary. Healing restores, but it does give one a sense of wonder, too, going forward.

Perhaps "Reinvención" would be better mphasize not just recuperation but also postive, dynamic change.
