Rachel and Pennylyd - Rachel: per dirimere il dubbio tra Dirigente e Direttore, sarebbe opportuno (come giustamente suggerito da Joseph) fare una ricerca in rete sul medico in questione (sempre che naturalmente ne sia riportato il nome!)
- Pennylyd: in effetti potrebbe essere semplicemente Distretti Sanitari (o Distretto Sanitario). Tuttavia così, senza un numero o una sigla ad indicare per es. la provincia, non ha molto senso IMO.
pennylyd Oct 1, 2020:
I agree with distretto being a possibility - dd.ss. does seem often to be used for distretti sanitari

Agree with Luigi, except I think it's "direttore"rather than "dirigente" - http://www.asl.bari.it/pdf/DETER_12952_2019_.pdf
Luigi Argentino Oct 1, 2020:
Altra ipotesi Sono abbastanza sicuro che DSS significhi Distretto Socio Sanitario (costituisce la subunità delle nostre Aziende Sanitarie Locali). Per quanto riguarda la prima D penso che indichi la qualifica del medico di ruolo cioè Dirigente (di prima o seconda fascia). Quindi DD.SS sta per:
Dirigente Distretto Socio Sanitario

Look up the Dr. `You can always try to Google this particular doctor and see if you can obtain information about his work or position.

pennylyd Sep 30, 2020:
dirigenti scolastici is the most common finding I've come across on Google but I don't think this fits your context. Perhaps some other plural? Direttori sanitari? or Dirigenti sanitari?
Luigi Argentino Sep 30, 2020:
Ipotesi Potrebbe essere: Direttore Didattico della Scuola di Specializzazione anche se al posto di "Dr" avrei trovato più coerente "Prof".

distretti sanitari

I am not sure but I do believe this is a plural term rather than every letter standing for an individual word (as in ss.mm.ii. or ss.ll. for example). There are numerous examples on Google - and of dd.ss.bb or dd.ss.ss. In my reference the text refers to both DD.SS and PP.OO. (presidi ospedalieri). And Joseph's suggestion of Googling the doctor in question is always a good idea.

The doctor in question is thus representing the 'distretti sanitari' - perhaps these are mentioned elsewhere in the document?

Doubling letters to indicate a plural seems to be a common occurrence in Italian. The fact that there is a full stop between the two sets of letters immediately brought this to mind for me.
