The Aesthetics of Resistance explores creative receptions of works of art that are received, discussed, and tried out as material for divergent 8 responses and expectations. Heilmann, Coppi, and the narrator engage in shifting and continuously retracting interpretations of many cultural products, including Dante’s Inferno. The myth of Heracles plays a central role for their self-realization as human beings and resistance fighters in Nazi Germany, Spain, France, and Sweden. When the friends visit the Pergamon frieze in Berlin, they interpret the absence of the face of Heracles as an invitation to think and act without any role models or directives: [. . .] und Coppi nannte es ein Omen, daß grade er, der unsresgleichen war, fehlte, und daß wir uns nun selbst ein Bild dieses Fürsprechers des Handelns zu machen hatten.
