French term

rompre la zone de commutation

French to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
Patent to do with fabrication of ferroelectric and resistive memory device.

"Au cours d’une opération d’effacement, une tension d’effacement est appliquée à la mémoire résistive pour rompre la zone de commutation."

Clues.

These sentences precede the above. XXX is a chemical compound:

"La figure montre la variation de la tension de « forming » de la zone de commutation dans une couche de XXX de 10 nm d’épaisseur en fonction de la concentration atomique, exprimée en pourcentage, de silicium ou d’aluminium présent dans la couche de XXX."

"Au cours d’une opération d’écriture, une tension d’écriture est appliquée à la mémoire résistive pour former une zone de commutation dans la couche de matériau actif, entre les première et deuxième électrodes."

This comes after it:

"Lorsque la mémoire résistive se trouve dans son état originel, juste après sa fabrication, la zone de commutation est formée pour la première fois en appliquant à la mémoire résistive une tension de « forming » supérieure à la tension d’écriture."

The "rupture" in question is about erasing the memory. I considered "to reset", but found no evidence out there. Hoping one of the resident electronics gurus (you know who you are) might recognise the right verb/expression.

En effet, if *you* don't know... ... then I don't feel too ashamed. I did quite a bit of searching. Thanks for the input. I have indeed gone for "switching area" rather than "zone"...
Tony M Dec 14, 2019:
@ Asker Not familiar with this very highly specialized technology, but as this 'rompre' seems to oppose 'forming', I'm wondering if 'break down' may be the verb you need?
Do also be aware that 'zone' can sometimes be 'zone', but also on occasion 'area' — however, I think in this instance, 'zone' is probably the one you need.

break up the switching zone

From Linguee, 'zones de commutations' is 'switching zone' which I expect would also apply to electronics as it applies to electricity as well.
As for 'rompre', it implies stopping or breaking but 'resetting' seems to be a further procedure.
(Electronic gurus seem unavailable up to now so this is my humble attempt)
Note from asker:
Thanks. In fact Tony M is THE electronics guru around this place! Linguee isn't generally regarded as terribly reliable, more a useful source of inspiration.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : Linguee is extremely unreliable. It simply dredges up bilingual sources and these are frequently very poor translations. This sort of highly technical term needs in-depth understanding of the subject matter.

disagree Daryo : with using Linguee as anything remotely approaching a reliable source, let alone an "authority" on anything - Linguee = the occasional rare pearl buried under Himalayas of trash ... not worth the expense of time.+ agree entirely with B D Finch
