Believe it or not, the problem is 了! Can someone please explain why the word 了 occurs twice in this sentence?

Just my own uneducated theory
The following is not to be found in any grammar books.
The first 了 is to indicate the perfect tense and the second is sort of an advance notice that the speaker has more to say. Thusly, while 這個病人已經請了三天病假 may be a sentence that can stand by itself, a follow-on is anticipated after 這個病人已經請了三天病假了.
Consider:
A: 這個病人已經請了三天病假了.
A few seconds elapse.
B: (expecting the follow-on) So what?
A: 可是他每天還上山走走!

Comment: "After much thought, but more time than thought I have decided to reward Yong Mei the points.
The final translation was "This person asked for three days sick-leave, but still he goes mountain climbing everyday."
Without more context it is of course difficult to respond, so I thank everyone for their effort -- especially, Ray Luo.
Maybe the sentence is poorly constructed for a Mandarin ear, but the text is for written Cantonese. Moreover, as a beginner it is difficult to know right from wrong without being told what is right!"
