Yes, I realize that's two terms, but it's their opposition I'm trying to work out. My document discusses different kinds of credit that banks extend to each other, and the terms that govern all this. Here's the sentence, under the heading "Crédits documentaires":
"Dès l’ouverture d’un crédit documentaire, la banque émettrice émet un engagement de financement en faveur de son client importateur (donneur d’ordre) au bénéfice de l’exportateur (ou de sa banque)"
So my initial take is: "Once a documentary credit line is opened, the issuing bank issues a financing commitment to its importer client (principal), benefiting the exporter (or their bank)" - is that clear enough?
Tried to get corroboration on this from export.gov, which gave good G-hits but is disabled due to the gov't shutdown... land sakes... anyway, thanks.

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"au bénéfice de" would refer to the person (in this case the importer) the bank is extending this guarantee to.
