Russian to English Bus/Financial Finance (general)

Или идти по тому же пути - "they may no longer be outstanding"...

Discussion

Ellen Kraus Nov 23, 2016:
Shares outstanding or oustanding shares refers to all shares currently owned by stockholders, company officials, and investors in the public domain, but does not include shares repurchased by a company

shares can be retired (or removed) from free circulation

www.investopedia.com/terms/t/treasurystock.asp
Although the company has repurchased its shares, those shares are not necessarily retired. Retired shares cannot be reissued and are taken out of circulation
Peer comment(s):

disagree The Misha : Shares are not retired (debts is) - they are cancelled, and in this case no shares get cancelled (the company simply gets taken private). Nor are they "in free circulation". They "trade". This is how such things are usually referred to in industry speak.

neutral ulaanaad : For Misha only. You cannot cancel shares. If you buy shares back, you still count it in your balance sheet. Free Float or Trade or Circulation of shares - no difference at all.

disagree Ilan Rubin (X) : 'free circulation' just isn't English. And for 'ulaanaad' - of course shares can be cancelled, eg if they have been treasury for at least 1 year.

will not / longer be available in the [free] market

Peer comment(s):

neutral The Misha : What they mean here is the comany might be taken private. Otherwise, there will always be shares on offer. It's just the matter of price, which, of course, will affect volume. A small float usually means smaller trading volumes,not a total lack of trading

True, true. But the context is peculiar, and it does not seem to me they talk about going private
neutral Ilan Rubin (X) : the 'free market' and stock market are rather different concepts

granting you this one, what about the circumlocution with "available"?

"traded" per The Misha's comment below.
Note from asker:
or "publicly floated"?
Peer comment(s):

neutral The Misha : Publicly TRADED, not floating. You can speak of a float, yes, but that doesn't translate into verbal use easily, whatever the reason.

Good point, thank you.

free-floating of shares can be stopped

Free float -
Peer comment(s):

You're mkng the same usage mistake as the other gntlman,which,unfortunately,is fairly typical of most nonnative spkrs not lvng in Eng-spkg cntries

Google search "free float" -35,100,000 results... As I understand, fortunately, you are native american living in US and working in NYSE or at least NASDAQ for 10-20 years?
neutral Ilan Rubin (X) : free float is used of course, but the sentence you suggest is not how it is used. You can say they are no longer in free float

Those who doubt that shares may be canceled,

have a look here:

There's a myriad other examples of course. A corporation is perfectly free to keep repurchased shares as treasury stock or cancel them. It all depends.
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree ulaanaad : you cannot cancel any share... you should buy it back first and ONLY after that keep or cancel.
