German term

Bügeltüre

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering forklift trucks
Doors on the left and right of the driver of a forklift truck. Instead of being a "normal" door with a steel panel and a window, this is just a (fairly thick) metal skeleton frame that protects the driver. I've found web pages showing forklifts with these doors, but only in German, and there are plenty of web pages in English showing forklifts but I haven't seen one with this type of door.
If you know the "official" industry name for this type of door, I would be very grateful to know what it is called. I've tried, for example, to seach for:
bügeltüren gabelstapler forklift
but didn't find the answer.

Discussion

philgoddard Jan 5, 2016:
Maybe gates rather than doors.
Oliver Walter (asker) Jan 5, 2016:
Yes, they are a restraint device that looks a bit like a door but doesn't meet the usual definition. I've provisionally called them "frame doors" but I'm hoping to find a better term. I often find "Bügel" a problem to translate: bar, clip, bracket, frame ... often clear from the context but not always.
Wendy Streitparth Jan 5, 2016:
If we were talking about cars a Rollbügel would be a safety bar. Maybe this could be adapted somehow (though I've not been able to come up with anything!)
.
Armorel Young Jan 5, 2016:
Not really doors at all As I'm sure you've discovered, there are plenty of nice pictures of Bügeltüre on the internet - although what strikes me is that we wouldn't really call them doors at all, since they don't close off the cab completely but simply consist of some sort of side bar that stops the driver falling out sideways. So I would be thinking about terms like "restraint bar" (or perhaps "side restraint bar") or "restraint system" - these google fairly well in connection with forklift trucks, although of course "restraint system" can encompass a wider range of options than the Bügeltür (since even a seat belt is a restraint system).

door bar(s)

Looking at how these apparently mainly German and Dutch operator restraints are described, discussed or referred to in English (side restraints more often than not, in line with the valid comments made at the outset by Armorel), turning it around in this way might be an option, especially if you would like to keep the reference to door in the actual name rather than using something longer and descriptive like "side restraints that operate like doors". I do think that bar is the most appropriate translation for Bügel here.

A few references (in no particular order):

Another much discussed trend was the addition of side restraints. Imagine a counterbalanced sit-down rider with bars mounted on the side of the compartment that the operator swings open like a door to get aboard. With this feature, if the lift truck tips over, it acts as a cage to keep the operator in the vehicle. Although these are not standard features on any U.S. lift truck, Wood says he’s seeing more and more special requests that could eventually become standardized.

SAFE OPERATION WITH FORK LIFT TRUCKS
Wear a seat belt, or if not fitted ensure that the cab doors are closed or side restraints are in position.

A German-manufactured forklift driver restraint, BodyGuard, is now available in Australia and New Zealand.
The restraint is a foam-padded door bar made of plastic and metal that does not protrude beyond a forklift’s outer contours.

We have heard endless debates in operations about whether it is needed to buckle up if the forklift has an enclosed cab and or door bars.

You could also look at the English-language material of some of the Dutch and German manufacturers and perhaps even contact their UK offices for information.

Still
retaining bar doors http://www.locators.co.uk/res/RX50 Technical specification.p... or restraint system with bar doors http://www.northernforklift.co.uk/pdf/r70diesel.pdf

BTW - A vaguely similar concept in English can be found in relation to 4x4 vehicles – bar doors, tube doors, custom roll bar doors, etc.

Try an image search for “bar doors” [or “tube doors”] + “4x4” [ or “jeep”], e.g.

Note from asker:
Thank you - helpful links. The type of door (or restraint) is as in the photo in the forkliftaction web page. I've done the translation (nearly 5000 words) and will review it today or tomorrow - then I'll have to decide what to call the Bügeltüren since they are both doors, bars and restraints; perhaps sidebar doors.
.. or bar doors as on p. 7 of the northernforklift pdf document.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "In fact I called them "sidebar doors". You have all helped, but Alison's references were the most helpful to me."

driver restraint system

Google for "Bügeltür, Gabelstapler" and you get plenty of entries with "Fahrer-Rückhaltesystem".

RÜCKHALTESYSTEM - which (also) translates into "Restraint System" (I support the explanations of Armorel Young) - which is confirmed by 3 technical dictionaries (ERNST, SIEMENS and BLAHA).

BLAHA (KFZ-Technik) states for "Rückhaltesystem, Automot." - passenger restraint system

Thus I would use "driver restraint system" for Bügeltür in combination with a forklift truck
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : But "Rückhaltesystem" is not the question. The answer presumably contains the word "doors" or "gates".

agree jccantrell : This does seem to be the industry term for all of these, but I would use 'operator' instead of driver to differentiate it from automobiles. See, down a bit: http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/safety_haz/forklift/operator....

Pilot Protector

Found in description of forklifts - with photos, ref. www.forkliftaction.com/news/newsdisplay.aspx?nwid=14931
i.e. steel frame protecting the driver in case of roll-over
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : This is a trade name.

Sure - it is, however it is used as a generic description for this system rather than using e.g. 'steel frame around doors to protect in case of rollover' or similar.
