Dec 22, 2015 13:22: Barend van Zadelhoff changed "Edited KOG entry" from "<a href="/profile/679346">katerina turevich's</a> old entry - "herlopers"" to ""returning to oestrus""
Proposed translations
get in heat again
In more cases things 'will work immediately' :-)

Katerina, you should 'use 'repeat breaders', as Kitty suggested.
This seems to be the correct technical term.
Basically, what I suggested is correct but this phrasing is not used in practice.
Please note: herloper = terugkomer, these are synonyms.
'herloper' is used in Belgium and 'terugkomer' is used in the Netherlands.
Look at this:
• The Plus Feed group gave significantly larger litters from 1st insemination (15.1 piglets) compared with the Control group (13.1 piglets).
• The Plus Feed group seemed to give more repeat breeders from 1st insemination (23%) compared with the Control group (10% repeat breeders), however this difference was not significant and can still be due to coincidence.
• Litter size and percentage of repeat breeders from 1st insemination of the Plus Protein (13.7 piglets and 10% repeat breeders) and Three Weeks group (13.3 piglets, 8% repeat breeders) were not significantly different from the Control group.
• The Plus Feed group shows a lower percentage of litters with ten or less piglets and a higher percentage of litters with 17 or more piglets from 1st insemination compared with the Control group.

The importance of nutrition to good reproductive performance will have become apparent in discussion of the ovarian cycle in Chapter 4. The specific effects of various dietary constituents on reproductive performance are still poorly understood, in spite of years of research. There are many conflicting reports on the effects that deficiencies of b-carotene and selenium, to name but two, have on reproductive performance.
In any herd of cows, even where pregnancy rates are typically high, a variable proportion of cows will require three or more inseminations in order to establish a successful pregnancy. Such cows often return to oestrus at regular, 21-day intervals and are thus known as repeat breeders.
Are those two or three cows problem breeders, or are they just unlucky? They could well be candidates for preventative treatments, but if they are repeat breeders in subsequent lactations they may well have an innate problem which could be inherited, and culling should be considered.

Katerina, I want to point out to you one more thing.
This shows you that I gave you a correct solution in unusual terms.
get in heat again means the same as return to oestrus
heat = loopsheid, tochtigheid, bronst, krolsheid (van Dale)
oestrus/oestrum = vruchtbare periode, bronst, paardrift (van Dale)
You gave up this was about pig health but according to the above reference this is about 'melkvee':
Now look at this:
herloper = terugkomer = [animal] returning to oestrus ('getting in heat again')
So these are you are your options:
- minder herlopers
- less repeat breeders
- less dairy cows returning to oestrus
Thank you.

: maybe more something like "will need to get in heat again" (i.e., betere bevruchtingsresultaten will result in less animals having to "try a second time")? / dus: minder herlopers = less second tries?

Thank you, Michael. "need" --> Good point to consider. It is difficult to say exactly without the immediately preceding context.

: Possibly in English also referred to as repeat breeders, repeats or returns (vs non-returns). All coming back to mind after having worked at the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University for several years :-).

Thank you, Kitty. Could be. 'returns', for instance, sounds like 'terugkomers', which is used as a synonym for 'herlopers'. And 'repeat breeders' seems to make sense as well.

second tries
Betere bevruchtingsresultaten - duidelijkere bronstsymptomen - minder herlopers =
Better fertilisation results, clearer heat/rutting symptoms, less second tries

based on Barend's ref, containing the term "terugkomer" (= herloper):
=
More piglets born alive, fewer sows returning to oestrus and fewer broken bones are important aspects you can count on.

The farrowing rate, described as the percentage of females served that farrowed related to first mating, decreased from an average of 86% in 2001 to 77% during the years 2002 and 2003 on a 620-sow farrow-to-finish unit. Alexander and Muirhead [3] suggested a target farrowing rate of 89%. The analysis of reproductive failures indicated that the reproductive losses during pregnancy were mainly due to high returns to oestrus and a high rate of non-pregnancy in sows.

Discussion
"betere bevruchtingsresultaten- duidelijkere bronstsymptomen-minder herlopers"
"betere bevruchtingsresultaten- duidelijkere bronstsymptomen-
minder herlopers"
"betere bevruchtingsresultaten- duidelijkere bronstsymptomen-
what you are all saying is perhaps "failed fertilization/rut"?
pseudocopulation or false mating ? - I'm just thinking aloud
When it gets in heat again you can opt for another fertilization.
second try means on the same day/during the same period?
or does it mean that the interval between two possible fertilizations/ heat periods is longer than desired?
Better fertilisation results, clearer heat/rutting symptoms, less second tries
OK, it works. the goal is to have as few of these cows unsuitable for fertilization as possible.
