This is where the seeker often encounters the greatest battles and finds the greatest need for holy violence. Like the Evangelist of Pilgrim’s Progress, the modern-day evangelist can only point the pilgrim to the narrow gate; he cannot carry him through it. The pilgrim must fight this battle alone. He must strive against whatever might keep him from surrender. He must wrestle with the Scriptures until he understands them, and grapple with the meaning of repentance and faith until he knows he possesses them.
