French term

dépoussiérage

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
Document dealing with information system (SI/IS) security.

"Contrôles anti-piégeages. Sur les SI particulièrement sensibles, il convient de mener des contrôles anti-piégeages réguliers, effectués par du personnel formé. Il peut être fait appel à des services spécialisés pour les opérations dites de « dépoussiérage »."

There are no other clues as to what this "dust removal" might involve, other than actual dust. The question is: presumably this is a figurative use, otherwise why say "dites" and why put it entre guillemets... Could it mean stuff like cleaning up hard disk space, defragmenting and performing similar chores?

Discussion

Graeme Jones Jun 18, 2015:
how about 'disk cleanup' as in the utility:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/delete-files-usin...
Daryo Jun 18, 2015:
well some comments (and answer: "malware cleanup") now gone would give the impression that these two aspects have been bundled together... I didn't dream it!
Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
Oh, I see ... on the assumption that we're talking about the same document... yes, see your point. You appear to have deleted 2 of 3 discussion entries you made, which makes things a bit confusing. Yes, it's curious. Signing off...
DLyons Jun 17, 2015:
Google your text!!!
Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
@DLyons This is slightly surreal: again I ask you: what on earth makes you think "physical" security is involved? Where O where do you see that in the original quote! signed: Baffled of Basingstoke
Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
umm I'm astonished by the amount of heat and noise going on in this question. Daryo: er, yes, fine... did anyone say the two aspects were the same? Lis Askew: "despeckling" would work fine for a cleaning up an image... but this ain't to do with that. It is perfectly clear to me, since Phil Goddard's contribution, that the process here is "system or disk (IT) housekeeping" ... !
Daryo Jun 17, 2015:
you have here TWO separate/different aspects of IT security:

1) contrôles anti-piégeages réguliers
2) opérations dites de « dépoussiérage ».

two totally different kind of problems - "dépoussiérage" IS NOT a type of "contrôles anti-piégeages"
B D Finch Jun 17, 2015:
May be relevant? I wondered whether the use of the idea of "poussière" could have some connection with the use of the word "poussière" for low value coins e.g. 1 or 2 euro cents. That would fit with the idea of getting rid of clutter. Hoovering one's hard drive, by contrast, would not usually be a method of speeding it up.
Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
@Philgoddard thanks... yes, yes... getting rid of clutter... or you could call it "housekeeping" of hard drives, etc.
philgoddard Jun 17, 2015:
Here's an example: Un dépoussiérage logiciel lui permettra de garder sa rapidité.

Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
how do you mean? I'm not sure what you mean by saying the text lists this under physical controls... where do you see that? "Piégage" I took to be "(DDoS) entrapment"... what do you understand by this term "piégage" in an IT security context?
Mpoma (asker) Jun 17, 2015:
aha Before I am excoriated for not doing enough preliminary research, I did in fact do a search for "dépoussiérage informatique"... unfortunately this brought up nothing but clean rooms. What I *should* have done is searched on "logiciel de dépoussiérage"... this has indeed led to some interesting pistes... but I'd still be interested in any replies!

How about "housekeeping", as used for cleaning up your computer?

Yes, sorry, when I proposed the translation I hadn't read the oldest entries in the discussion.
Note from asker:
see discussion... yes, this is what I came up with... but you can't answer your own question in Proz!
No problem... great minds think alike, as they say!

Note from asker:

agree philgoddard : Yes, it means getting rid of unneeded files.

Note from asker:
umm... thanks for the quick response, but as ever a simple link to a google search using words in the question is of limited use, and presumably I have already done stuff like this myself! My close reading of the FR tells me that it is likely (although not 100%) that this is a figurative use...
Peer comment(s):

disagree Daryo : wrong context, 'm afraid // the ST is not about image manipulation/editing software, but about security and efficiency of computers.
