German term

Doppelwärterhaus

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Denkmalschutz
https://www.rhb.ch/de/unternehmen/projekte-dossiers/neubau-a...

This shows a video of the house being relocated. Anyone has an idea what it may be called in English? It was built more than 110 years ago and was used as a hospital when the Albula tunnel was built.

Sorry but the only video I could find is in Romantsch.

TIA:

Hi everyone would anyone post a different answer? I'd like to close the question. Usually, I like Armorel's suggestions but I'm not happy with it in this case. Thanks.
Clive Phillips Jun 2, 2015:
@Edith Yes, I agree: linesman's house for two families. In the UK, most dwellings for linesmen were cottages or huts, as you can see by googling. Certainly not as large as this one!

Doppelwärterhaus = Bahnwärterhaus für 2 Familien Hier ein Beleg dafür:

Edith Kelly (asker) Jun 2, 2015:
so linesmen house for two families, Clive?
Clive Phillips Jun 2, 2015:
Google Streetview shows... ...the large house before and during the adjacent construction work for the new tunnel and its approach. I couldn't get the Romansh video to play/stream. You can see the stable extension (which seems to have been later extended by the addition of a gable and pitched roof above). I like Riesling's 'linesman's house'. Maybe something like the rather clunky "two-family linesmen's house". The Preda linesmen probably were responsible for upkeep/safety of their half of the tunnel line, with the Spinas linesmen looking after the other half.
Riesling Jun 2, 2015:
Wärterhaus Sounds like a larger version of a standard signalman's or linesman's house; a search combining "wärterhaus" and "Albulabahn" returns various matches, among them the "Kandidatur Unesco-Welterbe" on the RHB website, which describes the Wärterhäuser thus: "Einen höheren, wenn auch immer noch bescheidenen Anspruch [als Wärterbuden] hatten die über die ganze Strecke verteilten Häuser zu erfüllen, die den Streckenwärtern und ihren Familien als dauernde Wohnstätten dienten. Diese Wärterhäuser sind als Blockbauten mit angebautem Kleinviehstall konstruiert (...)".

Edith Kelly (asker) Jun 2, 2015:
Clive I haven't a clue. As I wrote, it was built when the Albula tunnel was built and served at that time as a hospital. When Albula II was built, it had to be moved because it's a listed monument. I just have a picture of (parts of ) it in a PP presentation and the title "Doppelwärterhaus", I found the video on google.
Clive Phillips Jun 2, 2015:
Not sure On Google Maps, from above it seems a substantial building. Is this the house where the signalman and/or crossing-keeper lived and/or worked? Is 'Doppel' an architectural term (two floors or semi-detached or two bays?) or does it refer to the number of keepers? Doesn't seem equivalent to what is called a signalman's box in UK.

double keeper's house

A Wärterhaus could be occupied by any sort of keeper (depending on context) - you can find references to Wärterhäuser in connection with lighthouse keepers, level crossing keepers, lock keepers and so on.

To my surprise, the term "double keeper's house" googles quite well, e.g.

The Middle Island Light consists of three structures: a double keeper's house, a fog signal building, and the light itself.
