The theoretical model underpinning this study is based on the consumption capital theory
(Stigler and Becker, 1977). It is suggested that the income of athletes is influenced by
both individual factors and the consumption capital of spectators generated through
media exposure of the sport (for an overview of the variables see Table 1).
