agree Takeshi MIYAHARA : I agree. In some cases, Japanese people might say it with a nuance of "..for now, just in case," but the point is just "to book a(nother) flight" in English. Sometimes, we'd better reconfirm "Go/No go" when one says just 押さえる on making reservation though.

Hold; Put a hold on...

Not that "reservation" is wrong, but it generally implies a more formal contractual arrangement with legal obligations. Cancellation (unless otherwise agreed) usually involves fees.

I think the nuance is closer to "hold a seat on another flight (etc)," or "Put a hold on another flight (etc)"
