Expectations have been found to alter spinal reflexes and the descending noxious inhibitory control. This raises an important issue that needs to be addressed in future research: While for expectation- induced placebo responses, higher centers of the CNS are needed, Pavlovian conditioning may also occur within the peripheral neural circuitry, e.g., within the enteric nervous system.
