Discussion

Helena Chavarria Dec 21, 2013:
@James Yes, I immediately searched for 'half-island' and only found one convincing reference. I then tried 'semi-island', 'half-isle', 'three-sided island', etc. There are quite a few G-hits for half-island racks (used for wine).
James Peel Dec 21, 2013:
The fact the term comes in inverted commas in the ST and doesn't appear in many parallel texts would suggest it is not a coined term - as such I would suggest a similar approach for the TT - maybe "half-island" or even "semi- island".
Helena Chavarria Dec 21, 2013:
Maybe something like 'three-sided stands/displays/counters' could work.
Jenni Lukac (X) Dec 21, 2013:
These might be "back wall stands" as they come close to mentioning the dimensions of such a stand described at: http://www.allstardisplays.com.au/exhibition_stands_and_hang...

Peninsula exhibit: A 'peninsula' is an exhibit or area with aisles on three sides. A Peninsula Booth is 20’x20’ or larger[9]
Split-island exhibit: A Split Island Booth is a Peninsula Booth which shares a common back wall with another Peninsula Booth[10]
Island exhibit: An Island exhibit is any booth exposed to aisles on all four sides. An Island Booth is virtually always 20 by 20 feet (6.1 m × 6.1 m) or larger[11]

Island and Peninsular displays can be
attractive, engaging and highly functional but
usually are not used for every show.

Brief
Design, manufacture and installation of Elizabeth Arden's half island retail display counter as part of a Debenhams modernisation project in their Chester store. The site was to include all the latest global specifications, high level canopy branding and key site elements, skincare, colour, fragrance, consultation and visible category stock holding.

Challenge
The half island was situated to the back and side of another premium brand, occupying a very limited matt space. The location also created structural challenges such as a split level floor, column cladding and several ceiling air ducts, venting and sprinkler systems above.
