Luther’s ninety-five theses were soon printed in Nuremberg, Basle
and Leipzig, but it was the publication, in the following year, of his
Sermons on Grace and Indulgences that launched him as a publishing
phenomenon. The ever-wider distribution of Luther’s views, through
pamphlets, broadsides and even printed cartoons, meant that there was
little hope that the debate could be confined to solely academic circles.
