Discussion

Yorkshireman Nov 10, 2013:
Something like this "At the entrance to the cinema, the user passes the mobile phone display of the barcode over the barcode reader. The reader then initiates callback verification of the barcode data against the booking/payment transaction data stored on the booking server. Successful verification of the booking/payment unlocks the turnstile to allow admission to the cinema."

A bit more added to tell the reader what actually happens in the process.

Sophisticated checkouts in supermarkets work on the same principle. Callback to the stock list on a main server provides not only the name and the price of the article number scanned and printed on the receipt, it also simultaneously employs a callback function to the server to determine when stocks are low and need reordering.

The server itself provides the latest prices prices and discounts and information on stock in hand. Analysis of the data also provides statistical information for future stocking by showing which lines are are selling well or are just taking up shelf space
Yorkshireman Nov 10, 2013:
The technical term for the "query" suggested as an answer is callback (call-back, call back).

This may help as a reference.

gangels (X) Nov 10, 2013:
Rückfrage A query (short for inquiry) is not necessarily a plea for verification (although as verb ('to query something') the connotation is such). In the US, you might say 'to check back on something' which as noun becomes a 'backcheck'
Yorkshireman Nov 9, 2013:
@Sebastian More than welcome! All the best from one weekend worker to another.
Sebastian Witte (asker) Nov 9, 2013:
Thanking you kindly, Yorkshireman Much appreciated.
Yorkshireman Nov 9, 2013:
@Sebastian As I added to my answer, there seems to be no difference between callback, call-back and callback - just pick the one you like best.

The Wikipedia entry calls it callback verification, but you've already got "verification by the server"

"... and is verified by a callback to the server."
Sebastian Witte (asker) Nov 9, 2013:
Callback? .

Sorry:
the reader verifies the barcode on the phone display by a callback to the server - not the other way around

The included callback functionality lets iCody interact with other applications and even websites using the icody:// URL scheme. So you could set up a Filemaker GO database and use iCody as an external scanner - also in combination with Linea Pro or Mobilogics.

What happens when the barcode is read from the phone display:

Payment Response (Callback)

Once a payment has been processed, either through to success or to cancellation, information about that payment is sent to you by using the Payment Response feature. The Payment Response feature posts the payment information from our server to a URL on your server via HTTP(s). This enables you to validate the information, update the order and if required display your own shopper result pages.

For instance if you have ordered a product online (in the asker’s case, a cinema ticket) the completed payment transaction is verified against the information stored on the server and (in this case) returns a message to the turnstile system to let the customer through.

query

I think I'd just call it a query. The barcode is read and then verified by sending a query to the server. (perhaps even omit the word: The barcode is read and sent to the server for verification.)

In practice, I would probably use my alternative solution: the translator's job is to reproduce the meaning, not necessarily to translate each word.
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Stephen : Your alternative solution, rewording to omit the word, sounds like real English, instead of a translation!
