In England, by the 870s, the whole northern part of the country
was overrun until just one Anglo-Saxon kingdom, Wessex, was left in
the south. In April 871, following the death of his three older brothers,
Alfred, the fourth son of King Aethelwulf of Wessex, succeeded
to the throne. He had visited Rome several times in his lifetime, and
even stayed for a while at the court of Charles the Bald in France (in the
year following the first attack on Tours). Under his leadership the tide
turned. In England the Danes were defeated and Alfred’s heirs gradually
reconquered the entire country. As part of the reconstitution of the
Anglo-Saxon kingdom monasteries were founded. They were important
centres of Anglo-Saxon culture, religion, literacy and the arts, and
they were seen as protectively cloaking their guardians both with the
continuous prayers of the monks and of the saints who were buried
there. Within seventy years of Alfred’s death in 899, a monastic renewal
movement was sweeping England, spreading from Glastonbury, where
the movement had its spiritual home under the patronage of its abbot,
Dunstan, soon to be Archbishop of Canterbury. With encouragement
and help from a cooperative King Edgar (for whom Dunstan wrote the
essence of the British coronation service still in use today), communities
of English monks refounded monasteries that had been destroyed, built
new ones and ATTACHED themselves to a number of cathedral churches
previously occupied by communities of clerks.
