The term appears in a document regarding disciplinary procedures at a university: "Il titolare dell’iniziativa del procedimento disciplinare (CdA – Presidente o Preside di Facoltà) è tenuto a notificare a colui nei confronti del quale risulta accertata la responsabilità di un evento configurabile come infrazione, ***la contestazione di addebito*** ponendo un termine per l’invio di giustificazioni di giorni venti."

I understand that it is a right to contest the accusation, but can anyone give me a correct legal term for this? It seems to be the precise name of the notification that the university is obliged to send the student.

@ Sarah In this case, the verb "contestare" (more precisely, the term "contestazione") is used exclusively in the sense of "to notify/notification". But it is an ambivalent verb/term, in Italian, and a couple of examples may be useful (I hope):

1) Il Pubblico Ministero contestò all'imputato il reato di omicidio = The Prosecutor charged the defendant with murder

2) L'imputato contestò l'accusa di omicidio = The defendant denied the charge of murder.

In this instance, the term "contestazione" has the meaning of the example 1), i.e. "notification (of a violation/breach/infringement)

So perhaps I have misunderstood the context? Does the term in question refer to just the notification of the violation, and have nothing to do with a right to contest it?

Anything like "violation", "breach" should be fine.

I would avoid "indictment" and "charge", though (for obvious reasons).
