Spanish term

Tío chulo

Spanish to English Other Other
Have "run aground" looking for a suitable translation...
The all-important context is a pamphlet on gender-based violence for school kids and the full sentence is:

"Si eres chico y estás harto de tanto tío chulo, si te avergüenzas de los comportamientos machistas, si pasas de las “supuestas” bromas"

and would prefer to veer away from "cocky" "cocksure"

All ideas appreciated, thank you

Discussion

Stephen D. Moore Jun 17, 2013:
From what I can find, the meaning can vary significantly from country to country.
Wendy Streitparth Jun 16, 2013:
Could it not be something as simple as "coolness/impudence/insolence/brazenness"?

A possibility?

neutral neilmac : Too UK-centred IMO... and the original "innocent" meaning (Aar, Jim lad) has been perverted

You're right on the UK centred - but I wasn't thinking of the 'innocent' meaning of it, more the 'one of the lads' meaning.
agree Jan Jokl (X) : This is what seems to suit best. It´s not about bullying or being big and strong. Being ´chulo´ is about being immature, and trying to act as a macho to hide it, trying to impress. Well done!

lout / bigshot

"Don't be a lout" is a common expression. Here it would need to be in plural "louts" or expressed in adjectival form "loutishness". Depending on the age of the child "lout" would sound more natural than the adjectival form. Both "lout" and "bigshot" are used in one of the examples below.

bully

It's very fashionable these days. Bullying can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of class, race, religion, gender, sexuality, appearance, behavior, or ability.

Some might consider this option a tad over the top, but what's a bit of hyperbole between friends?

agree Helena Chavarria : Yes, I immediately thought of 'big-headed bully', but I have discovered that there is a kind of pitbull dog with a similar name.
