French term

rachet

French to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture Minutes
Hello all,
This comes from a text on different pruning methods used in the Champagne region. I'm not sure what "rachet" means in the following, I'm assuming it's some sort of shoot. Grateful for any help!
Le principe théorique, consiste chaque année à supprimer la plus vielle charpente et la remplacer en effectuant un lancement à partir du rachet situé à la base. Le nombre de charpentes est en fonction de la distance de plantation entre ceps sur le rang
Proposed translations (English)
4 stool shoot
3 new bud
3 cane

Thanks to both. After a bit more research am thinking it may be renewal spur.
Barbara Carrara Mar 8, 2013:
Anne Following the link provided by walidd, I consulted my Wörterbuch der Landwirtschaft, which for 'long bois' (one of the synonymes for 'rachet') offers: one-year-old wood and noble sprout (if it's any help, the latter translates the Italian 'capo a frutto' - sarment à fruit). HTH

Mais en anglais, je ne suis pas sûr. Je vais y jeter un oeil.

I believe to be in reference to the technique of propagation by layering and therefore the equivalent term to rachet.
