Dutch term

Vrije Basisschool

Dutch to English Other Education / Pedagogy Basisonderwijs
zou u dit onvertaald laten in het Engels?
Of bestaat hier een specifieke term voor?

Discussion

Michael Beijer Aug 15, 2012:
Is there any way someone could change the language pair to 'Flemish to English'?
Frauke Velghe (asker) Aug 14, 2012:
Text would be Belgian (Flemish) so I agree with the comment on the Steiner School and leaving the original + translation in brackets...
Michael Beijer Aug 14, 2012:
@Frauke: Is your text Dutch or Belgian?
Michael Beijer Aug 14, 2012:
Flemish and Dutch are two very different things! The question was asked as 'Dutch to English', rather than 'Flemish to English', and doesn't mention Belgium. If it was meant to be entered as Flemish, I think it would be something like: 'Vrije Basisschool (Belgian state-subsidised private primary school)'

Gwen Suys Aug 14, 2012:
Is Vrije Basisschool the same as Waldorf/Steiner? I think it isn't. I attented Vrije Basisschool Rinkeling (www.rinkeling.be) and in the section 'Our Vision' they state the following: [Zoals onze naam al laat vermoeden, willen we een school zijn die van zich laat horen ! Maar vooral: een eigentijdse katholieke basisschool.]
This clearly states that they are a Catholic primary school and I'm quite sure that is not the same as a so-called "Steiner school".
I would leave the original and put a translation between brackets.

agree Kitty Brussaard : Omdat het bij nader inzien om een Belgische tekst blijkt te gaan, moet dit onderscheid inderdaad worden gemaakt.

Primary School for Waldorf Education (or Rudolf Steiner education)

Peer comment(s):

agree Kitty Brussaard : I would use the Dutch term and add this translation/explanation between brackets.

Thank you, Kitty. I think in the Netherlands a 'vrije school' is based on the Steiner (anthroposophy) approach.

Primary Steiner school

My answer is primarily UK English. Waldorf is more American.

This is what the UK's OFSTED government (www.ofsted.gov.uk/) site uses, e.g., here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd...

Example sentence:

I'm a secondary school teacher and there is a primary Steiner school in our area.

Her school – an Independent Primary Steiner school, was very open to the classroom adjustments and very willing to communicate with her speech therapist.
