Italian term

bosco romantico

Italian to English Art/Literary Architecture Grounds of a stately home
In the grounds of an Italian stately home, the plan is to recover
"i valori botanici, storici e artistici, sia negli spazi a *bosco romantico* che in quelli a giardino
formale".
I have seen instances on the net of stately homes which have a "bosco romantico all'inglese" .... I imagine it might be an area where Jane Austin's courting couples strolled, with the odd statue and maybe a little summer house - midway between a garden and a wood... but I don't know the specific name for it in English.
I've had a look at the Wikipedia 'history of gardening' on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_gardening#Picturesqu...
but not sure it helps - perhaps our 'bosco romantico' could be called a 'Picturesque' or an 'English Landscape' garden?

Any help much appreciated

(romantic) woodland groves / groves of trees

This is simply another option. We're lucky enough to live near a famous garden designed by Capability Brown and he created lots of groves in the parkland he designed. I think the word "romantic" may refer to the fact that they are in the "Romantic style".

romantic woodland walks

It's definitely a wood rather than a garden, but I think you're hesitating about the literal translation, "romantic woods", and it does sound a bit odd. How about this instead?

I think it would be a slightly artificial environment, perhaps, as you say, with paths designed to lead you past statues and summerhouses.
Note from asker:
This would also have been a good answer, I am sure, Phil, but in the end the 'romantic' came through with the use of Sonia's 'groves' and I also thus avoided using the word 'walks', not present in the original (client is quite fussy about liberties sometimes!) Thanks anyhow
