German term

redundant auslegen

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks Telecommunications, computers
e.g.: "Stromversorgung redundant auslegen"

I am having a hard time with the phrase redundant auslegen - it is used with power supply above - could it be "to equip/design the power supply redundantly???

Many thanks for your assistance in this matter

power supply redundant design

I'd support you there but redundant, not redundant*ly* here

disagree David Moore (X) : Redundant in this context is not "surplus to requirements!!" That is the commonest understanding of the word.

Yes, but looking at your answer below, that's redundant.

Provide a redundant power supply design.

Just a minor nit.

You have to make sure it is known that the 'power supply' is redundant, not the 'design.'

Standby, duplicated or back-up

Redundant can appear in as many German- English dictionaries as exist, it's almost always wrongly translated in my view, because its basic meaning is "surplus to requirements". Standby equipment, or duplicated, or back-up equipment, to my way of thinking could be of vital importance in emergency, and in no way "redundant", which the German language seems to be forcing on us. Talk about "false friends....".

C\'mon, fellers, we throw redundant workers on the scrapheap, don\'t we? I know - it happened to me....
We throw redundant equipment on the scrapheap, don\'t we? Why the hell should we call a stand-by or emergency provision of extra PSU or circuitry \"redundant\", then?
Peer comment(s):

disagree jccantrell : That is Brit, in the USA, redundant is used as a synonym for duplicated. There is a whole world out there beyond British English.
