Spanish term

restos de talla

Spanish to English Social Sciences Archaeology
The complete sentence is:
En el interior de las estancias, asociados a manchas de cenizas, han aparecido restos de talla encaminada a la elaboración de herramientas de trabajo fabricadas en piedra (sílex y cuarcita).

"Chips from carving"? Perhaps but it doesn't sound right to me.
Thank you for your help

Earliest stone tool evidence revealed

In a Nature article this week, a number of authors led by Shannon McPherron of the Max Planck Institute, announce the discovery of indirect evidence of stone tool use dating to 3.4 ma at Dikika, Ethiopia. Dikika is a site across the river from Hadar, the fossiliferous area yielding, since 1973,a quantity of fossils attributed to Australopithecus afarensis, comprising the largest number of individuals attributed to any of our early human ancestors. The latest Dikika finds are two bones, the remains of two animals the size of modern goats and cows, showing cut and scrape marks. These appeared to be deliberate, rather than the effects of natural abrasion, and were so confirmed by analysis under electron microscope.

lithic remains

"In archeology, lithic technology refers to a broad array of techniques and styles to produce usable tools from various types of stone."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithic_technology

"On the other hand, the occupation of gravel hillocks produced an abundance of faunal remains, fragmented and specifically diversified, associated with numerous lithic remains resulting from the production and utilisation of bifaces and flake tools."
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb3284/is_313_81/ai_n2...

"Over the last 4 years, we have excavated over 100 square meters and recovered over 10,000 lithic artifacts [...] The presence of well-preserved faunal remains along with numerous lithic remains and a wide variety of tools in stratified contexts enables us to document patterns in site use and to test hypotheses about technology, subsistence, and settlement of ancient populations in Interior Alaska."

The term "restos de talla" usually refers to "lascas" (flakes) and "núcleos" (cores), the latter being what's left when you've chipped off the former.

The term "lithic remains" does not always refer to stone tool production, but it usually does, and in this context the rest of the sentence will remove any possible ambiguity.

"Restos de talla" refers, in principle, to whatever is left behind from lithic reduction.

A valid alternative to "lithic remains" is "debitage":

"The term debitage refers to all the waste material produced during lithic reduction and the production of chipped stone tools. This assemblage includes, but is not limited to, different kinds of lithic flakes, shatter, and production errors and rejects."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debitage

"Large concentrations of worked lithic remains, or debitage, were identified in both ravines, particularly in the terraced area on the south side of the east ravine, where literally hundreds of fragments of debitage identified the place as a stone-knapping center."

That's fine, Lynne. I think "debris" is a perfectly valid option!
Note from asker:
Thank you for your suggestions. However, lithic is also used in the text in a different context so.. I also found debitage but, as this is a tourist guide I feel that debris would be easier for them to understand.

Many thanks, FVS
neutral liz askew : where does it mention lithic in the source?/I don't believe it is the correct term, lithic remains can include pottery/chipping debris is the accurate term and the accurate translation.

It rarely does refer to pottery and cannot here. // Liz, if you're sure you're right, that's fine, and you're quite entitled to criticise my answer, but I don't think this is the place to to assert that yours is correct.

Even though it is a French word, this is the term use in archaeological specialized literature.
Just google the term, you'll find lots of references.
