Document on power generation for large gas production plant and this fragment deals with details of the control systems to prevent a stoppage of supply.

Fragment: The extensive product range offers diesel powered generating sets from 8kVA to 3000kVA three phase with low, medium or high voltage options, and Digital Master Control (DMC) systems that automatically control multiple generator and UTILITY PARALLELING configurations, including short and extended term UTILITY PARALLELING, together with load management and direct breaker control.

@Meirs "Paralleling usually mean bumpless changover between two infeeds." is self-contradictory and is not in any way related to parallel operation, which is the subject of this question. As for "the entire utility is synchronized by definition", that is simply untrue in many practical sitations.

@mediamatrix You'll be surprised how many big utility customers have more than one utility infeed. Phase synchronization is not a big problem - the entire utility is synchronized by definition. Paralleling usually mean bumpless changover between two infeeds.

@Hector 'utility' is reserved, by convention, for the public power network, not the company's internal systems. No industrial power user, including those who have their own power generation facilities, are allowed to connect two incoming 'utility' feeds in parallel. Simply because they don't have the resources necessary to ensure proper synchronisation of any such inter-connection.

Evidentemente no es el caso pero no veo por qué dos "utility sources" no pueden estar en paralelo. En cualquier país con una red nacional puede haber cientos de empresas de energía en paralelo, lo cual, por otra parte, es la única forma en la que pueden funcionar. En el sistema sobre el que habla el texto de Myriam, la "red" es genérica y tratándose de una gran planta de gas es la red eléctrica interna.

En mi humilde opinión lo que quiere decir el texto es que el sistema DMC permite la conexión en paralelo de varios grupos entre sí y con la red (pública o privada, no importa).

@Meirs 'utility paralleling' most certainly does NOT mean "connects in parallel two separate power sources from the utility (national network)". It refers to the paralleling of the locally-generated power from the diesel powered generating sets mentioned in the same paragraph with ONE source of utility supply.
Paralleling 3000 kVA locally-generated power supplies with the grid is dangerous enough (even though one has control over the phasing of the local source); paralleling two utility sources would be downright lethal (and most likely illegal) since it could do untold damage to third-party installations.

As mentioned elsewhere on this page, it refers to the connection of the local power sources (diesel generators) with the national power network. The "Digital Master Control (DMC) systems" mentioned in the source text will have as their primary purpose to ensure that the local sources are correctly synchronized with the utility grid, in terms of voltage, frequency and phasing, at the moment when the breaker is closed to connect one to the other. If those sync conditions are not properly satisfied - BANG!
