French term
grand déplacement
French to English
Bus/Financial
Human Resources
This is relating to an exchange of employees between a French and a British company. I'm having trouble working out the best way to translated "grand déplacement". The employees will be on assignment for at least 6 months so this is more than an overnight stay or a business trip. Would "major assignment" work?
Le « grand déplacement » est caractérisé par l’impossibilité pour un salarié de regagner chaque jour sa résidence du fait de ses conditions de travail.
Thanks.

long distance assignment
From what you say, I imagine that it is the distance that prevents the employee returning home, rather than the length of the assignment.

While Maxim occasionally recruits a traveler to fill a long-distance assignment, we place a premium on using local staff that can fill the position promptly and remain available should emergencies arise.

Thank you for accepting the long distance assignment and I hope that we can do further work ahead."

Overseas assignment, or cross-Channel assignment may also be appropriate solutions.

Note from asker:
Yes, I think this is the closest to the meaning the text is trying to convey as it goes on to talk about length of journey time and the necessity of having a dual residence. Thank you! |

out-of-area secondment
It's a difficult one, as you can see from the previous discussion on the topic: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/human_resources/...
My suggested answer seems logical to me, but it doesn't Google well.

From the definition given in the context, I can't see that "long term" is going to fit the bill. It talks of distance, not of duration.
