French term

me fait exposer par

French to English Law/Patents Law (general)
I've never come across this term before. I assume it has something to do with legal representation, but I'm unsure of the translation. This is from a bailiff's official report.

Thank you.

Discussion

jmleger Jun 17, 2011:
@Laura That is what I thought as well, but apparently there is not anything beyond those recitals. It just seems like a way to introduce some party to the case.
Laura Elvin Jun 17, 2011:
Maybe something later in the document? Sometimes in legal documents the syntax can get quite spread out... Is there nothing later that could link back to it (e.g. les motifs, les faits etc)?
Rebecca Elliott (asker) Jun 17, 2011:
No, nothing unfortunately.
jmleger Jun 17, 2011:
and there is nothing beyond the title and address (which are in their place here)?...
What i am looking for is what is being "exposer".
Rebecca Elliott (asker) Jun 17, 2011:
The rest of the sentence is just the job title of Mr X and an address which is why this is quite problematic. I thought it had something to do with exhibiting something at first, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. HTH.
jmleger Jun 17, 2011:
Me fait exposer quoi?.. can you give the rest of the sentence?

... legal representative domiciled at such head office, who had Mr. X explain to me...

(This is bailiff speak, making simple things as complex and confusing as possible... called noyer le poisson in French)
Peer comment(s):

agree Didier Fourcot : explain, detail, set out, in French could have been "me fait dire par"

neutral Fr-EnD : I agree with "me fait dire par", but "dire" simply means "say".

having me informed by Mr. X, ....

Hello,

exposer = to make known (see definition below)

I'm not sure I would say "who" in the English translation (perhaps just "having me informed...")

me fait exposer par = has me made aware of

Laquelle = l'association

It seems like that it means "to inform".

Mr. Bartolino, Public Works Director, has me informed that an employee under his supervision is leaving the City to go to work for Brevard ...

I hope this helps.

Peer comment(s):

agree Fr-EnD : I think so. Someone instructed or asked Mr. X to tell the bailiff certain things.

Thanks a lot, Fe-EnD! I appreciate it. I don't think "explain" is the right word here.
