Portuguese term

profissão universitária

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
This is on a Brazilian marriage certificate. Would this refer specifically to a university faculty member (professor/instructor), or a university staff member more broadly?

Discussion

Nick Taylor Mar 21, 2011:
Thanks Kathryn There seemed to be so many comments about colons and commas flying around, I just wanted to make sure, :-)...
Marlene Curtis Mar 21, 2011:
I stick with my suggestion then Profissão universitária is a general term and may refer to any university-related profession such as researchers, professors, coordinators, etc.
Kathryn Litherland (asker) Mar 21, 2011:
no punctuation it's just as I typed it "de estado civil solteira, de profissão universitária"
Marlene Curtis Mar 21, 2011:
Punctuation It's a possibility, since this a BRAZILIAN marriage certificate.
Nick Taylor Mar 21, 2011:
is there any punctuation? is there any punctuation?
Marlene Curtis Mar 21, 2011:
Good question... It could well read
Profissão: Estudante universitário
T o b i a s Mar 21, 2011:
Q As Sheila asks, is this one expression 'profissão universitária' or two 'profissão' + 'universitária'?

University student

If there is a colon between the terms this person may be a university student, because this is how people sometimes refer to it here in Brazil when asked what they do.

As you can see in this example of a brazilian marriage certificate, there is no punctuation, and it is filledout according to what was declared to the notary officer:

So in this case, I would really expect the person to be a student, because a professor or other employee would most probably give their title. And for cultural reasons and the little number of universities available for the number of students, many people also consider an achievement just the fact of being in university, and would declare it as an occupation.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Nick Taylor : it would be unlikely if a student in Pt would put this term. I can't say for Br. But you are probably right.

At least here in the south of Brazil, I've heard many people saying it. And marriage certificates are filled out according to the information given by the requestors, so I would check it out, just in case.

agree Donna Sandin : and perhaps the age of the individual may favor "student" rather than something more advanced...

Good point Donna
agree Salvador Scofano and Gry Midttun : é isso mesmo, ela declara que é estudante universitária
