Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Apr 21, 2003:
SJH I know that 'in case of' is always followed by a noun phrase. How about 'in the case of'? Is it also followed by a noun phrase? or can I say something like 'In the case of such termination is made by the Company'?
This line appears in a works agreement in case it is of any help. Thanks.

in case of = in the event of /in the case of = in this specific case

In case of...

Is synonymous with 'in the event of' e.g.

in case of fire (in the event of fire) please leave the building

i.e. If there is a fire, in all cases, please leave the building.

In the case of...

Is used when specifying a particular case. You could be discussing several different cases/situations and want to identify just one and differentiate it from all others.

e.g. In the case of a person suffering severe burns, you should do xxx. In the case of someone drowning, you should xxx.

In the case of - could also be used when talking about legal cases.

e.g. In the case of the man arrrested for killing two people.

or

Recent developments in the case of the murder of the British police officer.

or

There were 9 witnesses in the case of a woman charged with arson.

I hope this helps a little bit.

Not always synonomous

In case of = in the event of
e.g. In the case of emergency
In the case of fire
Meaning: If there is an emergency/fire, etc.

In the case of = regarding, for
e.g. In the case of Champagne, the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier varieties are used.

Hope it helps.

in such case vs. in this case

Simply put.

("in the case of" refers to one specific case).

1 day 3 hrs

see explaination below

In the example you give in your "note added", you would have to say, "In the case of such termination BEING(not'is') made by the company", or, "In the case THAT such termination is made by the company", (both the preceding phrases have quite a formal 'Legal agreement' flavour), or "In (no 'the') case (no 'of') such termination is made by the company (more general flavour, but not incorrect in a legal context).

Hope it's some use
Good luck

Giuli
