French term

motoculture

French to English Tech/Engineering Agriculture
Everywhere we go "motoculture" is advertised.

We know that it mainly covers ride-on mowers and rotovators

But dictionaries suggest "mechanised agriculture" and "mechanised farming"

Is there another word that covers the ideas of "week-end" "small-scale" "domestic", please?

Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
Yes yes Mr G And if you could just tune down the revs on Sunday morning when the essential Archers Omnibus is playing on our valve wireless, we should be SO grateful. Otherwise Pop Larkin and I are great admirers
Bourth (X) Dec 9, 2010:
Oi! I just said I've got a ride-on mower, mate, so I'm not common!
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
I think that, largely you are right Carol Thank you. And I have this feeling that young Bourth has that indefinable common touch that is SO annoying but must be respected?
claude-andrew Dec 9, 2010:
Yes, I agree that most of the equipment referred to under 'Garden power tools' is small. Well, it depends on what your centrale d'achat actually selsl. If it's for tilling (which is the usual sense of 'motoculteur' (as opposed to 'motocculture'), you'd use a term like 'rotavator'.
Carol Rush Dec 9, 2010:
Could it not be 'motorised gardening equipment'? When I do a google search I get things like a lawnmower with a super duper engine, a flymo with the same, as well as sit on lawnmowers etc.
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
Claude-andrew Right. The first sit-upon comes in at no 64 for my search
claude-andrew Dec 9, 2010:
I get everything on googling image "garden power tools", from hedge cutters to ride-on mowers.
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
John I get blowers and flymos with "garden power equipment" Is it the same for you?
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
Hello Claude-andrew, thank you Right, I googled "garden power tools" and requested visuals and ended up with trimmers and teenies. Nothing Sit-upon, which is (as I see it) the very Sacred Temple of Motoculture?
claude-andrew Dec 9, 2010:
Fourth Yes - but try googling "garden power tools"
John Speese Dec 9, 2010:
I agree, "power tools" tends to connote hand-held tools, that's why I prefer power equipment. Granted it's a fine nuance.
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
Claude-Andrew Forgive me if I am wrong, but it seems to me that "power tools" are usually electric drills and saws and planes etc.
In other words small hand tools. And if one Googles "power tools" that's the result. Thoughts?
claude-andrew Dec 9, 2010:
In that case, I'd call it "a garden power tool outlet"
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
My particular sentence, Phil, is "En mars 2010, X et Y ont crée Z une centrale d'achat spécialisée en motoculture"
Which doesn't give much of a clue for anyone wondering what "motoculture" might be. Personally, I hate lack of context, so I understand your objections.
It struck me as strange that my dictionaries seemed so far from the mark.
philgoddard Dec 9, 2010:
No, I just meant you haven't given us a sentence containing the word.
Jack Dunwell (asker) Dec 9, 2010:
Well Phil It's as common as muck here in the great South-west. The mainstays are ride-on grasscutters and then there are rotovators and then it seems to peter out into smaller garden and horticultural tools aimed at the individual/small scale producer/gardener. I'm quite happy with answers which do reflect much of this.
philgoddard Dec 9, 2010:
I think the reason why you're getting so many answers and no agrees or disagrees is because you haven't provided proper context.

garden machinery

My Tibberton (Gloucester) supplier of parts for my Westwood ride-on is
E. Buckland Garden Machinery L.L.P.

Even with postage, parts come out at half the price of working through a French supplier (though I haven't actually ordered any really heavy parts).
They undoubtedly do other brands. I recommend them.

Look at the link: lots of ride-ons, chainsaws, seed spreaders, exactly the sort of things the local motoculturistes do. Quads too, but I'm not sure they count, even if the locals deal in them too.

home and garden power equipment

I'd say home and garden power equipment, outdoor power equipment for homeowners, etc., as per the websites for the companies that make this stuff that I gave you below.
Note from asker:
Thank you John, that's nearer the mark!

neutral B D Finch : Wouldn't that include electric drills?

I don't think there is a truly specific EN equivalent for FR motoculture. DR, the company whose website I listed, uses the term "home & garden power equipment" and they make lawnmowers, brushcutters, etc. and that's all.

self-propelled garden/horticultural equipment

Starting with one that isn't a ride-on mower:

"The Turbo70 SP is the top of the Lawn-King garden vacuum range and is a self propelled unit powered by the eco-friendly B&S XLS 50 5 Hp low emission engine."

Dropped? Hardly. I think that the whole point of "moto" is that the equipment concerned is too big and heavy for the operator to push or pull and so it is self-propelled, which can cover both ride-on equipment and the sort that the operator walks behind but doesn't have to push.
Note from asker:
do you think that "self-propelled" might be dropped, BD ?

Garden power tools

Any garden equipment that uses a motor, whether electric or internal combustion.
The term scores a large harvest on Google.

Strictly, your term "motoculture" would be "Gardening with power tools"
