Generator
Hi Folks,
Has anybody come across 'Erreger' or 'Errgermaschine' in the context of generators? I have been translating it as 'Exciter' or 'Exciter Engine' but I'm unclear about whether that is the term actually used by electrical engineers.
Any assistance welcome. Thanks.
Steven

exciter
Exciter it is, you're right. A generator (or a motor) can use permanent magnets or coils to produce the magnetic field. Those coils are indeed called exciter coils.
One of the advantages is that you can turn the generator off by breaking the exciter circuit while the rotor can keep rotating. With permanent magnets in the stator, you'd have the problem of either having to quickly stop the rotor or getting rid of the produced electrical energy.

As regards "Erregermaschine": That's indeed an exciter generator, as Richard says. In large installations, a separate auxilliary generator is used to produce the necessary electrical energy for the exciter coils of the main generator.

generator exciter
Generator exciter ist aber OK. Erregermaschine (Exciter) steuert das magnetische Feld in den Generator-System und regelt die Spannung und / oder Strom.
