Discussion

Jack Dunwell (asker) Jun 14, 2010:
Clanola These might be, in a UK context then, without the social structure content, sole traders, partners and directors.
Question mark.
Jack Dunwell (asker) Jun 14, 2010:
I'm rather surprised about The VERY direct and somewhat naff translation, well referenced by Stéphanie. I suppose that the UK equivalent is the Directors' Disqualification Act 1986. Which is a neat, non-emotive, non-reactive approach. I note the use of "rehabilitation" for "assainissement" in Bridge. What are "business professions"?
MatthewLaSon Jun 14, 2010:
Comment I think it's just a way of saying "to clean house" in the profession (i.e., remove corrupt people, practices, etc).

Best of luck!

Thank you Matt. I think this is a much better approach than the "official" one.

enhancing the integrity of commercial practice

Basically a mission impossible.
Note from asker:
Thank you, A. This is very specific disqualification law, covering in this case, company directors

business/professional integrity

I don't think you need to translate "assainissement". You don't need to say "enhancement" or "rehabilitation" or whatever, because by implication, a "business integrity law" is designed to improve integrity, just as a pollution law would be intended to prevent pollution.
Note from asker:
Thank you PhilG I agree. I think it's worth remembering this was 1947 and a lot of post occupation cleaning up was going on!

business clean-up

Example sentence:

Wal-Mart and Tiffany are trying to clean up the gold-mining industry.

Note from asker:
Are they staking other miners' claims, K? Is this just the Klondyke or might they be moonlighting at Auschwitz on the tooth front? A hearty breakfast for all and the League of Gentlemen walk off with the lot...

This is what you find on the English pages of Legifrance website:

The provisions of Act no. 47-1635 of 30 August 1947 relating to the cleaning up of the commercial and industrial businesses are applicable to persons carrying out door-to-door selling.

neutral liz askew : I believe this is a translation. beware! I got into serious trouble quoting this site the other day./Hmm, well I shall be doubting official translation from now on, after the telling off I received.

Of course it is a translation, but so far it's the "official" one (since Legifrance is the official French law portal). So this should be a good reference (unless badly translated!)
neutral philgoddard : I think it has been badly translated. You wouldn't use a phrase like "cleaning up" in the title of an act of parliament. Another sign of poor translation is the definite article before "businesses".

neutral B D Finch : Looks like there is a job for somebody there correcting Legifrance's English version.
