Spanish term

bajo distintas tonalidades

Spanish to English Science Archaeology Rock Art
Dear translators,

I am a little stumped here. I understand the words in themselves, but in this context I am at a loss as to how to render this phrase:

Este método permite obtener 3 tipos de información: una imagen topográfica de los granos de pigmento, una imagen por contraste químico que nos muestra bajo distintas tonalidades los diferentes elementos químicos presentes (cartografía); y finalmente, un espectro químico con los distintos elementos químicos existentes en la muestra.

Thank you again for your help

with the use of different tones

I understand this to be some kind of testing using chemical contrast imaging with different tones to bring out the contrast.

with different tonalities the various chemical elements present

Mi sugerencia.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jim Tucker (X) : "tonality" is probably a false friend here

neutral J Celeita (X) : sorry Leonardo, I saw that tonalities was also used for paintings, but it's something to do with how the colors unify, not the tones.

I am not keen on "tonality" (usually associated with sound in English), and I would turn the phrase around here:)

agree Jennifer Levey : Agree above all with 'colour'. 'shades' would be a fair alternative. 'tones' (and all derivatives) is (are) thoroughly misleading.
