Discussion 5. Faculty views on the role of personal qualities in fielding an interdisciplinary course
In discussing the personal resources necessary for developing and maintaining an initiative like the Global Change Project, the faculty emphasized three qualities:
- a willingness to put forth an "uphill effort," by working through the inevitable obstacles that surface during the implementation of interdisciplinary curricula.
- leadership
- a "bottom-up," "grassroots" mentality that instructors, not administrators, are responsible for the success of the initiative.
They observed that if these characteristics were absent from the people involved in creating and maintaining the project, it would ___"fall through the cracks,"___ especially in a decentralized university like the U of M. George Kling, biology professor, and Bob Owen, associate dean of the College of Literature Sciences and Arts, emphasized the importance of a committed faculty.

- Teach Them All to Read: Catching the Kids Who Fall Through the Cracks
by Elaine K. McEwan
- My Big Hands (Fall Through the Cracks)
(Print the Lyrics)
Well it ain't my fault
My fault that things gone wrong
And it ain't my fault,
Some things are sticking out.
My big hands
Keep my big hand to myself.
Tip toe too
Tip toe around the house
Come, Come on in
It's not, it's not like that
Down, down we go
Fall through, fall through the cracks.
Well I help myself
Help myself to what I want.
Side by side
Get stupid in the dark.
Didn't get home
Things broke down
No sense
Not at all.
Come, Come on in
It's not, it's not like that
Down, down we go
Fall through, fall through the cracks.
Good luck!

: Thanks for the example with kids. But IMHO 'отбиться от рук' would be better than 'выбиться из колеи'

'отбиться от рук' - expects some deviation already, like somebody who's beeing controlled, 'выбиться из колеи' is more like who's willing to catch up with the peers, or, at least, doesn't seems to be looking for trouble intentionally...
