Family fare

English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Film review
Dear all,
I would like to know the meaning of "Family fare".

Following is an excerpt of the review:
"Tim Burton takes on the producing duties in this ambitious movie described by the New York Times as a ‘feature-length animation beyond the confines of cautious family fare".

Many thanks!

Discussion

juvera Nov 16, 2009:
Quite right Knowing some of Tim Burton's films, now you summed it up well: needing care and caution - but plenty of fun.
Sheila Wilson Nov 15, 2009:
Outside of the norm It's a fine point, but there is a standard to be met for classifying a film as "suitable for family viewing" - this one is outside of that "norm" hence maybe not entirely UNsuitable but needing care and caution
juvera Nov 15, 2009:
Not suitable for family viewing? The quote merely says: beyond the confines of cautious family fare.
In other words, breaking the barriers of the usual, cautiously childish cartoon movies produced for family viewing, but it does not say that it is not suitable.

In this case, it's an animated film. Whilst many animated films are called cartoons and loved by children, this one is not for children.

fare is an old-fashioned word for something to eat - winter fare is soups ans stews; summer fare is salads and ice-creams

Thanks - hmmm, interesting possibility
agree sueaberwoman : The line quoted appears at the end. (The review specifically mentions that the film is not suitable for young children; it's rated PG 13, not R.) http://movies.nytimes.com/2009/09/09/movies/09nine.html
