Albanian term

Matranxhi

Non-PRO Albanian to English Other Genealogy
Is this a common family name in Albania (or in Kosovo for that matter)? How widespread is it? Is it limited to a specific area? Please humour me and compare it to an English surname in terms of how popular (used) is it. Please give examples of English surnames that are just as popular (percentage wise %). Does this name mean anything? What does the root word mean?

Matranxh (Village)

This is a surname tied to a geographic location, more specifically a village in Kukës, Albania. The roots of the village could be connected with the Byzantine Matrënga/Matranga/Mataranga family. (This has nothing do with the Romanian meaning) This tribe has also been traced in FYROMacedonia (Likovë), Italy (Arvanites) and Greece (Arvanites in Aetolo-Akarnania) as there were many Albanian medieval migrations. The etymology could be from the Gheg 1. Mat +rranx = at the base of the river Mat. 2. M'at+ranx = at the foot of (mountain).
