German term

Leitungen

German to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng PCB Quality Control Leitung vs. Leiter
"Layout der **Leitungen** - Das Layout der Leitungen wird von den Metallisierungsschemen jeder einzelnen Schicht bestimmt." and "Definition der Leitungskanten -
Die Leitungskanten müssen so gleichmäßig wie möglich sein.
Confused about when to use "circuits" or "conductors", I've seen both. Circuits are also referred to as "Schaltungen" depending on context. If I use "conductor", then what do I use for "Leiter" in the next section: "Die Isolierung zwischen den Leitern auf gleicher Ebene, sowohl in Bezug auf externe, als auch auf interne Schichten, muss mit den Herstellungspapieren übereinstimmen."

Discussion

Johannes Gleim May 19, 2009:
track layout (PCB) (3.070 Google hits) is more frequent than trace layout (1.480 Google hits), e.g.:
PCB layout can be performed manually (using CAD) or in combination with an Autorouter. ... Surprisingly, many autorouted boards are often completely illogical in their track routing ... The CAD PCB layout consists of several layers, ... The width of the tracks is a trade-off based on current flow, ... The track layout is a similar trade-off that also picks ...
Double sided Laminate
Two layers of copper tracks, one each side of the board
..
Multi-layer
A PCB Laminate may be manufactured with more than two layers of copper tracks by using a sandwich construction.

Pretty sure "trace" is right, thanks jccantrell In this context anyway. See text re: "trace layout" at http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6384346.html
Christina Bergmann May 14, 2009:
In this text as well? Sometimes (German) authors want be especially smart - and choose the wrong words. This is a phenomenon I have encountered a number of times.
Ellen Kraus May 14, 2009:
Leitung und Leiter - two different things ! to my thinking it is imperative to differentiate between Leiter und Leitungen, these terms are not synonyms, see also Bernd´s comment on this point.
Christina Bergmann May 14, 2009:
I would say yes. But I sure do take criticism gladly
Ryan Saxon Montcalm (asker) May 14, 2009:
Hazel: So in this context "Leiter" and "Leitungen" are just synonyms for conductors?
Bernd Runge May 14, 2009:
conductor is definitely a Leiter. Leitung can be as simple as cable, line, lead, connection, or even wire ...
Christina Bergmann May 14, 2009:
Could it be that the author(s?) is referring to the same thing? And uses, as Germans often do, synonyms?

traces

As you mention 'metallization' in your context, I have to assume that you are speaking about printed circuit boards. From this, the conductive paths are called traces.

agree Herbie : "Leitungen" (here) = Leiterbahnen = traces

Conductor

Yes Leitung/leiter is conductor.

conductions (leads, pathways, pilotages) see below

conductions as opposed to conductors, the latter being <Leiter> (conductor ends =Leiterenden=.

tracks

There are different designations used in industry:

In the double-sided circuit board (1) with through contacting conductive tracks (2, 3) on opposite sides of the board are electrically connected to each other by contact bridges (5).

(EN) The invention relates to a printed circuit board with a circuit carrier zone, in which a circuit carrier (S) is located. Conductor strips (LE1, LE2) of the printed circuit board (L) are directed towards a guide zone (F) of the printed circuit board (L)

A printed circuit board, or PCB, is used to mechanically support and electrically connect electronic components using conductive pathways, or traces, etched from copper sheets laminated onto a non-conductive substrate. It is also referred to as printed wiring board (PWB)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printed_circuit_board

What is often used? I googled with "PCB":

Conductive track has 491 hits
Conductor strip has 354 hits
Line space has 11.200 hits
Circuit path has 2.510 hits
Conductor has 147.000 hits
Conductive pathway has 767 hits
Trace has 124.000 hits
Track has 1.590.000 hits

The category covers printed wiring boards intended for use as components in devices or appliances. The boards may use organic or inorganic base materials in a single or multilayer, rigid or flexible form. Circuitry construction may include etched, die-stamped, precut, flush press, additive, and plated-conductor techniques. Printed-component parts may be used.

This category covers flexible printed wiring defined by the cross-sectional configuration, including right-angle conductors, mid-point connections, etc. This category does not cover flexible printed wiring where the cross-sectional configuration is the same for the entire length of the product. The latter construction is covered under Appliance Wiring Material (AVLV2).

The tests may include the determination of material flammability (burning characteristics), conductor adhesion, delamination, and silver migration. In addition, the effect of long-term exposure to elevated temperature (air-oven aging) on property retention may be investigated. Levels of performance characteristics required for a particular end-product application are intended to be in accordance with the requirements of the end-product standard. Due to space limitations, only a limited number of property values may be presented in the individual Recognitions. Additional properties may be found in the individual Reports.
