gracilidad

palaeontology
I need some help translating this word in this context:
Al igual que los metacarpos, los metatarsos corresponden a un elemento diagnóstico para la identificación de Lama gracilis debido a su longitud intermedia entre guanaco y vicuña y a la gracilidad característica de los metapodios. Tales rasgos son observados en la muestra que comprende dos metatarsos casi completos producto de que las epífisis distales se encuentran sin fusionar.

gracile
Personally, I'd restructure it to use "gracile" rather than gracileness. Something like "its characteristically gracile metapodials."

Richard's suggestion of gracileness is also in the correct spirit of the context, but if you do a Google book search for the term, for example, you'll find that very few authors employ it in the noun form.
Hence, I suggest minor grammatical restructuring to express the idea in a way that mirrors the way native speakers of English write about gracile metapoidals.

: "slenderness" works too. Here is the evidence that it is used in palaeontology. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=slenderness dinosaurs&hl=en... is an ultimate authority on the English language, IMHO.

gracileness
This is a technical term used in physical anthropology and archaeology that contrasts with "robustness." It is used to describe certain hominid skeletal types.
Example sentence:
The lack of a prominent supraorbital tori and gonial angle indicated a female along with the over all gracileness of the skeleton.

: hi, if you are a palaeontologist, then fair enough if this is what you use in the field. But it is not reflected on any academic sites re this subject.//I DO agree with "gracility":-) FWIW.Journal of Dinosaur Paleontology

Actually, "gracility" would probably have been a better choice, but I agree with you that using the nominal form will result in a better English translation.

Richard McDorman
: The problem is that "gracileness" is a term of art. Although in a more general context, "slenderness" or "gracefulness" could work, this is a discipline-specific term that has a very specific meaning in the archaeological literature.

Kathryn Litherland
: in paleontology, gracile does indeed mean slender, slight, or delicate bone structures, but that does not mean that the terms slender, slight, delicate, or graceful can be substituted for it in a technical text.
