Although I think "preventive detention" is understood here, "pre-trial confinement" is more usual.
The person in question is called "sentenciado", which means that a ruling was made on this person. (This is not "sentenced", because a "sentencia" doesn't necessary include a penalty, though in this case it obvously does.) But an American court would still refer to him as a defendant.
In our US counterpart, the court would remand the defendant pending sentencing rather than extending pre-trial confinement. The "prisión preventiva" covers both pre-trial confinement and remanding pending sentencing (which is why it can be extended).
