Transport / Transportation / Shipping
Shipping
This is referring to ships that are in a dangerous condition, aren’t maintained properly, and don’t comply with the safety regulations. We’re talking oil tankers and such.
Any ideas for an English (UK) equivalent? ‘dustbin ships’ sounds awful to me, and ‘junk ships’ sounds like, well, a Chinese junk. I’ve also thought of ‘rust bucket’, which I quite like, or something with ‘tub’ instead of ‘ship’.

Comment: "Thank you ALL. Although I quite like floating dustbins too, I'm going along with the general consensus as it seems to be an established term for UK English."

floating dustbins
Is what I occurred to me and then I found this instance of someone else using it, presumably having picked up Chirac's phrase the other day about the Prestige

: The English terms used are translated from the F. by unthinking journalists. "Rust bucket" is far more idiomatic and conveys more urgently - with "rust" - the risk of imminent shipwreck.

Yet more than half the world's 10,000 oil tankers are the old-style, single-hulled variety despite outcries after every disastrous spill, from the 1989 Exxon Valdez in pristine Alaska to this week's sinking of the Prestige off the verdant coast of Spain.***********

: The Valdez was hardly the first "disasterous spill," just the worst and most publicised off the U.S. coast. So far.
