Vino da meditazione è una felice espressione coniata da Veronelli per indicare quei vini che sarebbero sprecati se accostati ad un cibo. Si tratta di vini passiti o liquorosi, ricchi di sfumature, da aprire a fine pasto oppure alle cinque del pomeriggio di un giorno di festa.

Dessert wines is a literal translation. If you want to stress that they are not for swilling down with food, you might have to add 'to be savoured'. There is also the term 'fine wines', but is not very specific.

However, wines that get this description, usually are also good with desserts, so sometimes this is translated "dessert wine".
I think it is clear, that "vino da meditazione" should remain untranslated, with some explanation added between brackets.

Giles is one of our contributors on proz but he is also the official Gambero Rosso coordinator for their wine translations into ENglish (did I get it right, Giles?).

His glossary suggests "dessert wine" too, but as I perceive it, this may be a little too specific here and the alternative could be "sipping wine" - which fits in with the idea of a wine to sit with and mull over, rather than accompanying any specific dish...

innanzitutto il significato di 'vino da meditazione':

" [I vini da meditazione] Vino da meditazione" è un'espressione coniata dal grande guru del giornalismo enoico italiano, Luigi Veronelli, che voleva in questo modo nobilitare una categoria di prodotti troppo spesso snobbata dal grande pubblico, soprattutto nella nostra penisola. Si tratta dei cosiddetti vini da fine pasto o vini dolci in genere, anche se possono rientrare, sotto questa nuova denominazione, i grandi rossi lungamente invecchiati. Ma cosa si intende, esattamente, con questa frase? Il significato può essere ambivalente: da un lato si considera l'approccio del consumatore al vino, che impone un atteggiamento di calma e riflessione, oltre a molto rispetto per la sua composizione, del tutto "speciale" se raffrontata alla media dei prodotti esistenti. Oppure, meno prosaicamente, si può considerare la meditazione vista dalla parte del vignaiolo, che deve pensare a lungo prima di intra prendere un processo produttivo poco remunerativo, pieno di incognite, che può alla fine dare anche un prodotto di grande qualità, ma solo dopo aver passato lunghi anni di invecchiamento e maturazione, che non sempre garantiscono automaticamente un buon risultato. Cerchiamo allora di capire più esattamente di quali vini stiamo parlando: si tratta di vini dolci tranquilli, quelli cioè senza bollicine, prodotti per lo più con uve passite.

Dalla definizione, che considererei abbastanza affidabile, abbiamo tre elementi:
1) è un termine nuovo
2) si riferisce a vini dolci importanti o vini rossi di grande pregio, mi sento di escludere i bianchi secchi
3) oltre alle caratteristiche organolettiche del vino fa riferimento al processo di vinificazione, dalla vigna alla bottiglia
4) magari implica anche un certo modo di bere questi vini

Ne deduco che:
1) traducendo con 'dessert wine'... come tradurremmo poi 'vino da desert' che pure esiste ma non è certo da meditazione, o comunque non necessariamente
2) essendo un termine di origine italiana è probabile che sia stato coniato dopo il termine 'sipping wine'
3) tra l'altro dai riferimenti in rete il termine 'sipping wine' è usato abbastanza generosamente, un esempio tra tanti:

with some pleasant cabular francisch character
4) forse 'sipping wine' non rende proprio bene l'idea di 'vino da meditazione', cioè credo che l'espressione 'vino da meditazione' sia molto più ricca di tante sfumature che, a mio parere, debbono essere conservate.
5) Forse 'meditation wine' non è certo un'espressione anglosassone, del resto neanche Veronelli lo è, ma di certo, magari messo tra virgolette, trasferisce più fedelmente la complessità e la varietà dei contenuti e ... induce alla meditazione
