S'inventait-il un monde parallèle où tout était possible entre nous? Ses *déchirements* devaient être profonds pour maintenir mon éveil pendant toutes ces années et m'aveugler en me faisant douter que derrière lui se tenait l'autre.

It seems to me as this story unfolds from question to question that there is an ongoing theme of doubling - a parallel world, one person hidden behind another... Could it be that the rifts in his being must have been very deep indeed to maintain, etc.?

It feels stronger to me, in the context... after all it is referring to 'tearing' as in when your insides are ripped apart.

tearing himself away from his real self, split
Not actually suggesting that as a translation, but trying to get to the heart of what "déchirement" must mean here. It seems to me it is an unusual use of the word.
If I understand correctly, the person was playing a different persona, leading his partner to think he was something different to his real self. He was thus "tearing himself in two" in the sense that he was portraying himself to be very different from what he really was, and what she eventually discovered him to be, I presume.
Quite how to say that in a word I can't think offhand, but it seems to me that none of the proposals so far capture that.
Maybe simply "split" (as in "personality") ??? The splits in his character??
